What makes it work
The style is a ceiling, two materials, shiplap and big glass. Get those four right and an ordinary kitchen or spare room reads as a barndominium; miss the ceiling and it reads as farmhouse. Every render below follows the four rules, including the cheap ones.
A barndominium interior is a ceiling with walls under it. Vaulted, planked, with beams or trusses you can see. In a real barndo that is the structure; in a normal house it is a false ceiling or a set of applied beams. Either way, if the ceiling is flat and white, the rest of the kit reads as farmhouse, not barndo.
Wood and black metal. Reclaimed or rough-sawn wood on the ceiling, one wall or the table; matte black steel on the windows, the lights, the door hardware and the chairs. Every render below is those two materials on a white or shiplap ground. The moment you add a third — brass, a coloured cabinet — it becomes a different style.
Shiplap is the wall finish that says barn without saying stable. Horizontal, painted white or soft white, floor to ceiling on the walls that matter. It also hides the join where a normal room meets its new plank ceiling, which is why it is on every full conversion here.
Barndominiums have oversized windows because a steel frame lets them. In a normal house, the move is to paint the existing frames black or replace them with black steel-look units and lose the curtains. The dining room renders show how far that one change goes on a room that already has the glass.

Why it works This is the barndominium kitchen most people have in their head, and it works on an ordinary kitchen because the kit is mostly surfaces: shiplap, painted fronts, a wood top and black lights. The beams are the one structural move, and the render shows how much they do on a ceiling this low.

The plain living room Full conversion What changed The blank back wall became a full-height stacked stone fireplace with a stone hearth, the flat ceiling became vaulted wood planks with a heavy timber truss, the grey sofa became a brown leather sectional, and a black iron ring chandelier hangs from the ridge. The window, its curtains and the floor are the originals.
Why it works The full rustic version, and the render that most reads as a real barndo, because it has the two things a normal house lacks: a vaulted ceiling and a wall-sized focal point. Stone plus wood plus leather is a lot of brown; the white side walls and the sheer curtain are what stop it from becoming a lodge.

The plain living room Full conversion What changed The ceiling went up and got a black steel truss, the curtained window became a black steel-framed glass door wall, the back wall got floor-to-ceiling oak slats, the floor became polished concrete and the coffee table became black steel. The grey sofa stayed.
Why it works Modern barndominium is a different animal from rustic: white, black and pale wood, nothing reclaimed, nothing brown. This render is the cleanest statement of it on the page. Notice that it needs the height — the truss and the tall glass are doing the work, and on a flat eight-foot ceiling the same kit reads as Scandinavian.

The formal dining room Full conversion What changed The olive curtains left and the glass wall got black steel frames, the walls went to white shiplap, the ceiling to wood planks and beams, the carved chairs to black metal, and the brass chandelier to a black iron linear one. The table, the rug and the floor stayed; one of the original carved chairs survived at the back.
Why it works The glass wall was always the best thing about this room and the curtains were hiding it. Black frames turn ordinary glass into the oversized steel windows a barndominium is known for, at the cost of a tin of paint on the frames. Everything else here — shiplap, planks, black chairs — is a surface, not a structure.

The window, its sheer and the oak floor are the originals.
Why it works Everything a barndominium bedroom is supposed to have, on a spare room that was empty an hour earlier. The plaid is the one nod to the barn; without it the room is a smart modern-farmhouse bedroom. The sconces on cords rather than lamps is the detail to copy — it is what keeps the bedside tables clear.

Why it works The same room as the vaulted bedroom, and a completely different mood, from swapping white shiplap for black. Dark planks make a bedroom feel enclosed in the way people mean when they say cosy. The cream bedding and the big window are the counterweight; without them this would be a cabin.

The plain living room New surfaces What changed The back wall to vertical white shiplap, a single heavy dark beam across the ceiling with a black fan on it, the sofa to cognac leather, the coffee table to reclaimed wood on a cowhide, and two black sconces on the shiplap. The window and curtains stayed; the render kept the ceiling flat and gave it one beam rather than a vault.
Why it works A useful accident. We asked for a vault and got one beam, and the result is the version most people can actually build: shiplap, a beam, leather and black metal on a flat ceiling. It reads as barndominium from the doorway, and nothing in it needs a structural engineer.

The oak kitchen New surfaces What changed The oak fronts to matte black slab, the window to a black grid, four black dome pendants in a row, black beams across the ceiling and a black range hood. The render kept the laminate counters, the lino floor, the white appliances and the oak island, so this is closer to a cabinet-paint job than the full modern kitchen the sentence asked for.
Why it works Honest about what it is: black fronts and black metal on the kitchen you have, and it already reads as modern barndominium. The beams on a flat ceiling are the trick to steal. If you want the full version, the sentence to add is "replace the counters with white quartz and the floor with polished concrete" and expect a bigger bill.

The formal dining room New surfaces What changed Curtains down, window frames black, walls to white shiplap, the brass chandelier to a black wagon wheel. The table, the sideboard, the rug and the floor are the originals. The render swapped only half the chairs: the two carved armchairs at the ends stayed and black metal chairs went in between.
Why it works This is the weekend version, and the chair mix is the useful lesson: keeping two of the original chairs at the head and foot is a real decorator move that saves buying eight. Shiplap and a wagon-wheel light on a room with a glass wall is most of the barndominium look for a fraction of the farmhouse render above.

The oak kitchen New surfaces What changed The oak fronts to white with black pulls, the counters and the island top to butcher block, three black pendants over the island, a black faucet, and the walls to white boards. The render drew the boards vertical (beadboard) rather than horizontal shiplap, kept the fluorescent box lights on the ceiling and left the island sides oak.
Why it works The cheapest kitchen on the page and the one to try first. Everything here is paint, a wood top and lights, and the kitchen is unrecognisable. The box lights staying is a good reminder to say "remove the fluorescent ceiling lights" explicitly — the engine keeps what you do not mention.

The sofa, the table, the curtains and the floor are exactly as photographed.
Why it works Not a barndominium — a living room with a barndominium wall, and that is the point of showing it. The barn door does more than the planks: it is the single object that says barn without ambiguity. This is a weekend with a nail gun and a door kit, and it tells you whether you want the rest before you commit to a ceiling.

Why it works The vaulted bedroom without the vault, on the same room, so you can see exactly what the ceiling adds and whether you need it. For most people the answer is this one: it is shiplap, a bed and a door, it costs a fraction, and it reads as barndominium the moment the barn door is on.

Where to start
In order of change-per-dollar. Most people who want the barndominium look stop at step two and are happy. Nobody should start at step four without having rendered steps one to three on their own room.
Black pendant lights, black cross-back chairs, black cabinet pulls, and a sliding barn door on one opening. No trades beyond an electrician for the lights. The living room and dining room "keep the layout" renders are mostly this.
A few hundred to low four figuresStart with the wall behind the bed or the sofa. It is a weekend with a nail gun and a tin of white paint, and it is the single finish that most reads as barndominium. The empty-room bedroom render is shiplap, a wood bed and a barn door, and nothing structural.
Low four figuresIn a kitchen, white shaker fronts with black pulls and a butcher block island top do most of the work. The oak kitchen "keep the layout" render is exactly that, with the fluorescent lights swapped for black pendants, and it is the same kitchen.
Low to mid four figuresApplied beams on a flat ceiling, or a real vault if the roof space allows it. This is the step that separates the full conversions from the rest, and it is the one to render on your own room first, because the drama of the beams depends entirely on how tall the room is.
Mid four to five figuresWhat goes wrong
The style is a narrow palette, and it goes wrong by adding to it. Each of these is a real, common mistake, and each one is avoidable at the render stage for free.
Wood ceiling, wood walls, wood floor and a wood table is a sauna. The renders that work keep the wood to the ceiling and one wall or one piece of furniture, and put white shiplap or plain white on everything else.
Applied beams read as decoration when they are narrower than a hand. If you are adding them to a flat ceiling, go bigger and fewer — three heavy beams, not eight thin ones — and stain them darker than the floor.
Barndominium is a materials palette, not a theme. Word art, galvanised buckets and gingham push it into a look that dates fast. Let the beams, the black steel and the glass do the talking.
A barndominium interior with dressed windows is a cabin. Paint the frames black, hang nothing on them or a plain roller blind, and let the glass be the biggest thing on the wall.

Most of it. Shiplap, black metal, a barn door, reclaimed wood furniture and black window frames all transfer directly. What does not transfer is the ceiling height and the huge glass, which is why the "keep the layout" renders on this page read as farmhouse-leaning rather than full barndo. Applied beams on a flat ceiling get you partway. A vault, if your roof allows one, gets you the rest.
Rustic is white shiplap, dark stained beams, a stone fireplace and leather. Modern is white walls, black steel trusses, polished concrete, slab cabinets and slat wood. Both are on this page on the same real rooms. Rustic is warmer and more forgiving of a normal ceiling; modern needs the glass and the height to work and looks thin without them.
White, black and wood. That is genuinely the palette. White on the walls and ceiling boards, black on the metal, and the wood tone you choose — pale oak for modern, dark stain or reclaimed for rustic — as the one colour in the room. Greige, sage or navy work as a single cabinet or door colour, but the renders here that read most strongly as barndominium are the ones that stayed with three.
Black fittings and a barn door are a few hundred to low four figures. Shiplap one room and paint the frames black is low four figures. Painted cabinets with a butcher block island are low to mid four figures. Applied beams or a real vault is where it becomes a building job, from mid four figures to well past five, and it is the only step here worth rendering three ways before you call anyone.
