What makes it work
None of them is the table. What separates a modern dining room from a dining room with new furniture in it is the light, the chairs, how many materials there are, and what is on the walls. Every render below follows these four; that is why the old table survives in two of them.
A modern dining room has one fitting and it hangs over the table, about thirty inches above it — a linear bar for a long table, a globe or a sculptural pendant for a round one. No sconces, no chandelier at ceiling height. This single decision does more than any furniture.
The table is a slab — oak, walnut, stone — with nothing carved into it. The chairs are where the design goes: bouclé, leather, wishbone, black metal. If you are keeping an old table, this rule still holds; the chairs and the light are what people see.

Why it works The warm end of minimal. Wishbone chairs are the one piece of modern dining furniture that has been in production for seventy-five years and still looks new, and pale wood on pale wood is calm in a way white-and-black is not. It suits a room with this much daylight; in a darker room the same scheme goes flat, and you would want the charcoal version instead.

Modern is unforgiving of clutter in a way traditional is not. Each of these is a common mistake, and each one shows up in a render before it shows up in a room.
It is the wrong way round. The chairs are what the eye reads at a dining table; the table top is mostly covered. Change the chairs first, the table last, and look at the green-wall render above to see what happens when you do it backwards.
A pendant that hangs a foot below the ceiling is a chandelier with a modern shade. Hang it low enough that a tall person notices it — about thirty inches above the table top — or it does not read as a dining light.
A table, six chairs, a sideboard and a display cabinet in the same wood from the same range is the thing that dates a dining room fastest. Two materials, mixed, across pieces that were not bought together.
Family photos, plates, a clock, a mirror and a print, all on one wall, are what most dining rooms are hiding under. Clear them and hang one large piece — or nothing, and let a colour do it.
