The sideboard becomes the bar
What changed Only the right wall. The sideboard became a dark wood bar cabinet with a marble top, two glass shelves of bottles went up above it under a brass picture light, and two teal stools went in front. The table, the carved chairs, the chandelier, the sconces, the curtains and the rug are the ones in the before photo.
Why it works The dining room is where most home bars actually end up, because the sideboard wall is already the drinks wall. This is a cabinet swap and two shelves, and the room is a bar for the length of a dinner party and a dining room the rest of the time. The picture light over the shelves is the detail that does the work: without it, this is a sideboard with bottles on it.
The sentence that made it
“Keep this dining room exactly as it is but turn the sideboard on the right wall into a home bar: replace it with a dark wood bar cabinet with a marble top, glass shelves with bottles and glassware on the wall above it lit by a picture light, and two brass bar stools. Keep the table, chairs, chandelier, curtains and floor exactly where they are.”
